For my aDSL connection I use a pseudo-ip domain. I have a dynamic IP address so every time my IP address changes by my ISP, the client program updates the domain name. Instead of tracking down the IP address changes, I use this domain to have access to my server any time.
The job of updating the domain was done by the modem-router. Nowadays, every decent aDSL modem-router has a Dynamic DNS client that can be configured to make an update every time it is needed. 2 days ago I changed that and the update procedure is now handled by the server itself. I configured the client, used it to make an update just to make sure everything works, and I left it alone. But, I forgot to add the client to the startup processes, so after I rebooted the program was not launced. The IP address changed, the pseudo-ip domain pointed to the old address and so I had no clue to what my new IP address was!
I found a workaround though. I use torrentflux-b4rt as a bittorrent server. I knew what torrent files were on the server, so I redownloaded one of them from the tracker. After launching Transmission on my mac and loading the torrent file, I switched to the Peers display in the Inspector window. Looking to the clients used by the other clients, I waited until a BitTornado client showed up. I use BitTornado in my torrentflux setup, so there was a good chance that was my server. Checked the IP Address, and immediately fired up an ssh connection pointing there. After logging in to my machine, I was able to update the pseudo-ip domain again and to add the ddclient to the default init,

Άσε, εκείνη τη μέρα είχα φάει μεγάλη ήττα γιατί δεν ήξερα αν ήταν πρόβλημα γραμμής ή πρόβλημα υπολογιστή, ή διακοπή, ή οτιδήποτε άλλο. Σκέφτηκα να φτιάξω script για να σκανάρει τις διευθύνσεις και να προσπαθεί μέσω public key authentication μόνο (password login είναι απενεργοποιημένο), αλλά το πρόβλημα είναι ότι είναι τεράστιος ο όγκος τω δυνατών διευθύνσεων, συν του ότι δεν γνωρίζω όλα subnets της Forth. Μέχρι και την Forthnet σκέφτηκα να πάρω να μου πουν την διεύθυνσή μου! Μετά το πρόβλημα το είδα στο σύνολό του, δλδ. έφυγα από το ssh αποκλειστικά και έβαλα στο παιχνίδι όλες τις υπηρεσίες που έχω πάνω. Ε, το bittorrent ήταν το πιο εύκολα υλοποιήσιμο.
Με ένα γρήγορο ψάξιμο δεν βρήκα ανάλογη περίπτωση στην ιντερνετική “βιβλιογραφία”, οπότε αποφάσισα ότι πρέπει να μάθουμε ακόμα μια χρήση του BitTorrent. 🙂
